No Drum Kit? No Problem! With A Tin Can I Can!

Once upon a time, long ago......Mr. Boom Boom wanted a shiny new drum kit so he could rock a beat and make some noise! Sadly, he didn't have one and  Mom and Dad said he needed to be serious about drumming before he could get one. Eventually, after years of tapping on anything and everything he could possibly find, Mr. Boom Boom got a real drum kit.

Wasn't he cute?

Anyway, I thought about Mr. Boom Boom's story and how hard it can be for some kids to get a drum kit when they're just starting out. It's definitely an investment you don't want to take lightly. That's why I came up with the ultimate solution that gives kids the opportunity to rock a beat, get creative and help the environment too. All you really need is your recycling bin and your rhythm!

INTRODUCING...........THE TIN CAN DRUM KIT!

Here's What You Need......

• Tin cans with lids from the recycling bin
• Heavy duty glue
• Two to three pieces of 2 x 4 wood
• Hammer
• 1 inch nails
• Drum sticks

Pluckaploo Is Here!

After recording the Pluckaploo song for the album, we decided he needed a face lift for our live shows. You know, a new look. A three dimensional style. A few rockin' feathers to boost his coolness.
So we picked up a few pieces of foam, some cement glue and a pair of scissors.

We added sunshine yellow spray paint.

Styrofoam eyes and black permanent marker.

Loads of feathers.....

and of course a guitar.

Forget Parking.....Let's Write Music!

We were late to a friend's birthday party because of insane traffic in Brooklyn, and to make matters worse, we couldn't find parking.  At this rate, going to this party was not happening.  As we desperately looked for a spot, the frustration started to build like a pressure cooker ready to blow.  And that's when my husband started to beat box.  Yes.  Beat box.  Maybe beat boxing was not the most appropriate thing to do while anxiously looking at the ticking clock, but that's what my husband decided to do with his frustration.  And truthfully, I found myself slowly giving in as he laid down the groove.  I couldn't help it.  It was pretty good.

And so it goes, we forgot about the parking spot and we wrote a tune instead.

We did eventually find a spot and had a great time at the party, but most importantly, that night, we made music.

Check out this video of us trying to find parking and singing another song from our upcoming album, "Everybody's Cool!"

I Get To Do THIS

I was recently having a conversation with a woman who said something that stuck like a good noodle sticks to the wall.  When referring to her business, she said, "I don't have to do this.  I get to do this."  What a wonderful way to look at life and all of its noodles.  Instantly, I thought about one particular noodle of mine that always fills me up and that I certainly am fortunate enough to "get to do."

The Hiccups! is a kid's band that I don't have to do, but gosh darn it I get to.  Most importantly, I get to do it with my awesome husband!  Together, we get to create magic through music, inspire kids to dream BIG, follow their hearts and rock on with their bad selves.  We certainly don't have to do any of this, but thank goodness we get to.

It was such a great eye opening statement that this woman gave me.  My husband and I have been toying with the idea of actually recording all of our material and creating an album.  We've been talking about it forever but we always seem to get too busy with everything else.  Truth is, we've never made it a priority.  So as we celebrate our "get to do" noodle, we decided to finally record that album that we never have the time for.  We get to do what we love.  So we're doing it!  Stay tuned!  It's almost done!

Rock Your Beat

I was planning on writing an uplifting story about how we wrote the tune, "Rock Your Beat"for the upcoming album.  But as I tried to remember what inspired this tune, I was left with absolutely no recollection of ever writing it.  So naturally, I asked Glenn if he could recall the time.  He had no clue either.  Ok.  No help there.

Picture
Of course my head started dizzying itself with questions.  Were we abducted by aliens and that's why we BOTH can't remember writing it?  Did we write it in our sleep?  Could it have fallen out of the sky and bumped us on the head?  This was a very curious situation and one without any answers.

So, we gave up on the story and decided to record the song instead.  As I sang into the microphone, we soon realized that we weren't supposed to remember.

How "Rock Your Beat" was created wasn't the important part.  The "uplifting story" was in the actual song.  I guess you could say in THIS instance, it wasn't about the journey.  It was about the destination.

A Song Is Born

9/11/2014

My phone started ringing.  I glanced at the caller ID and noticed it was my husband who had just left for work ten minutes ago.  No, he wasn't calling to remind me of a gig or because he forgot to tell me he wouldn't be home for dinner.  In fact, if he calls me from the car a few minutes after he has left the house, I know I have to drop everything and answer the call.  You see, the car is like a magical musical bubble for my husband.  For some reason, any time he's in it alone and stuck in traffic over the bridge, he gets inspired.  And when that happens.........a song is born.

I picked up the phone quickly and heard his voice ringing in my ears as he sang, "It's just another day, but it's not."  It was the simple line that started it all. Then he said, "What do you think babe?  Can you run with that?"  Yup.  No problem.  I had a million things to do that day, but when inspiration calls, you have to answer.

Picture
I sang the line over and over in my head as I fed the kids breakfast and got them ready for their day.

"It's just another day, but it's not."

The line was so powerful.  I was drawn to the concept of waking up every day and making each moment unique and important even though it's "just another day."  And who does that better than kids.  When my children wake up, each day for them is an adventure.  They have no idea where their IMAGINATION will take them.

"It's just another day, but it's not."

Then I thought about how our town just raised enough money to rebuild our playground and there it was..........my lighting bolt of inspiration.  The playground is a place for dreaming, creating and imagining.  It is comprised of all the same pieces and yet everyday can be a new beginning for children.

I sat down at the piano and wrote the lyrics and melody to our first hit single on The Hiccups! album.  Then I gave it to my husband and he made it come to life.

Here's a sneak peak teaser of our first single called "Just Another Day."
